Senator Ron Johnson Leads Tomah Field Hearing
Ron Johnson shows leadership while Tammy Baldwin continues to dodge questions about her involvement in scandal and cover-up
[Madison, Wis.] – Today, Senator Ron Johnson, as Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, is leading a delegation of House and Senate lawmakers to conduct a field hearing on the Tomah VA Medical Center scandal. Reports of unusual opioid prescription practices at the center became public this year. Tammy Baldwin received an inspection report detailing gross negligence from the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General in August 2014 – and failed to act on its contents for five months. Baldwin was the only member of Congress to have a copy of the Inspector General’s report.
Baldwin has since admitted that her office botched its handling of the situation, but has continued dodging serious questions about her personal involvement. Baldwin and her team have orchestrated a massive cover-up that includes attempts to silence a terminated employee with hush money and a misappropriation of taxpayer dollars. Last month, the Republican Party of Wisconsin filed an Ethics Complaint with the United States Senate Select Committee on Ethics against Tammy Baldwin for this unacceptable conduct. While Baldwin called for a review of the situation, it was conducted by her deeply partisan attorney and funded by her campaign.
“Ron Johnson, using his powerful position as Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, is taking the lead on investigating what really happened at the Tomah VA to ensure that Wisconsin’s veterans get the care they deserve — and that this does not happen again, said Chris Martin, Communications Director for the Republican Party of Wisconsin. “Voters should be alarmed by Baldwin’s conduct during this ordeal – and Wisconsin deserves answers.”
